Evidence/activity/anecdote:

The evidence that I have gathered for this standard is a student’s math self- assessment sheet and a teacher assessment sheet for the Geography Terms Booklet Project. I find the self-assessments in math to be informative to see how a child views him/herself as a learner. I give it before a test to inform my teaching and also after the test. Experience has shown me, though, that in order for self-assessments to be useful I need to spend class time modeling this. Students have to learn how to assess themselves.

Impact on student’s learning:

I think having a rubric is essential because the students know exactly what is required of them before any unit begins. The expectations are clearly stated. As far as planning goes, the backwards design where I start with the assessment is just more efficient.

After each unit students also get timely feedback from me as to what they have achieved and what are their next learning steps. All rubrics are marked, discussed in class, and sent home for parents to see.
